A recipe change to a popular Whole Foods product has raised alarm bells among disbelieving shoppers who claim the retailer has “ruined everything.”
The $5 berry Chantilly cake was a popular treat among Whole Foods shoppers until one curious fan discovered how it suddenly took a turn for the worse.
One online creator shared her frustrations and showed viewers the cake she purchased, priced at a flat $5, which she says has major changes from her original lush, fruit-filled recipe.
“It’s just a little English tea cake now,” she said, describing the new version as having berries on the outside, being filled with jam in the middle of the cake and now “being half the size it used to be.”
According to online users, the cake is now filled with jam in the middle instead of fruit, doesn’t taste the same, and is half the size it used to be.
“It tastes like a cleaning product with raspberry jam,” she said after tasting the cake.
The creator mentioned in another recent video that Whole Foods had been making all sorts of changes to its products and stores that also disappointed customers.
Including removing grilling machines from the floor, discontinuing in-store sushi chefs and changing the macaroni and cheese recipe.
“We have let them ruin everything!” he said.
One commenter wrote: “The way I audibly gasped.”
Another said: ‘I used to work at a Whole Foods bakery and it’s been crazy since Amazon bought it, they now sell everything frozen and it’s more expensive.’
Another creator was equally disappointed.
Lisa, who often posts about her law school experiences, referred to the change as “criminal behavior.”
She goes on to say that the “worst news of my life” came when she found out they were changing the product.
The user says she used to receive one serving weekly, but went and found no servings available and was told it was because of the recipe change.
“He said, ‘Oh, we actually changed the recipe, we don’t make it that way anymore,'” she said, “They send it to us frozen now, there’s no fruit in the middle anymore,’ and I thought, ‘Why would they do that?'”
She goes on to say: “Not only are they taking away the fruit, but they are raising the price.”
Online user Lisa shared her frustration in a video after discovering the cake she bought “weekly” was now being sent frozen with a change in the recipe.
Lisa was also told that the only original Chantilly cakes left are the whole cakes, so she bought one and hoped to freeze the pieces, but found that the whole cake still didn’t taste the same.
He ends the video by expressing his disappointment and that he “thinks all of America is disappointed,” calling on Whole Foods to reverse its decision.
Commenters on both videos shared their own disappointment and expressed their love for the older version of the cake.
One said: “They’ve been getting rid of all the good things.”
Another tagged the Whole Foods account and said: ‘WHAT? I’M DISGUSTED @Whole Foods Market.’
“NO, I GET THIS CAKE FOR MY BIRTHDAY EVERY YEAR,” another commented.
Whole Foods told the Daily point‘Previously, our single-serving berry Chantilly cake program varied by store location.’
They continued: ‘We recently aligned the flavor profile, size, packaging and price so that customers have the same high-quality experience in each of our stores: a delicious slice of cake with fresh fruit, berry compote, cream cheese mascarpone and fluffy layers of vanilla cake.’
