When UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot in the middle of New York by a mysterious killer who immediately disappeared, there was speculation that the murder was the work of a professional.

But in the hours since suspect Luigi Mangione’s arrest Monday at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, it appears his background is unconventional for several reasons.

It has since emerged that the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate comes from a close-knit Italian-American family in Baltimore.

The Mangiones are one of the most influential in the area, known for their vast real estate fortune and philanthropic efforts.

Following the suspected killer’s arrest in Altoona, the family released a brief statement expressing “shock and devastation” but noting that the suspected killer had become estranged from his family members.

As he awaits extradition to New York on murder charges, DailyMail.com took a look at everything we know so far about Mangione’s family.

Mangione is the son of Louis, 71, and Kathleen Zannino Mangione, 60, who raised their three children in an $865,000 home. Realtor.com reports.

Louis is the owner of Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company founded by his father in 1977.

His wife runs KZM Boutique Travel, which facilitates trips to Italy, among others. Following her son’s arrest, it appears the company’s website has been set to private.

In a book review for Tim Ferriss’ “The Four Hour Work Week,” posted to his Goodreads account, Mangione wrote about his mother forcing him to eat his steak with his right hand despite him being left-handed due to her emphasis on social norms.

He used the anecdote to make clear his disdain for the status quo, the world Wall Street Journal reports.

The relationship with his family seemed to have deteriorated in recent weeks. On November 18, his mother reported him missing to San Francisco police, just over two weeks before Brian Thompson’s murder.

A police source disclosed the report to the San Francisco Standard. It’s unclear why Kathleen contacted police in the City by the Bay, but the family does have relatives there.

The couple sent Mangione to the prestigious $37,690-a-year Gilman School, where he graduated as valedictorian in 2016.

Louis is one of ten children born to his parents Nicholas and Mary Mangione. Like most of his family, Louis was born at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC).

To this day, much of the family’s philanthropy centers around the hospital, which named its obstetrics department after the Mangiones after receiving $1 million in donations.

The eldest MariaSanta, 34, is a respected doctor. She now works as a medical assistant at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas after graduating from Vanderbilt medical school.

According to her Linkedin, she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland.

Meanwhile, his other sister Lucia, 32, still lives in Baltimore, where she works as an artist.

She is married to Paul Giulio, whom she married in her hometown in June 2022.

After news of her brother’s arrest broke, Lucia shared an image of herself posing on a beach with her sibling with the caption, “Praying for you.” The message has now disappeared.
