He’s the new presenter of Weekend Sunrise and a rising star on Channel Seven.
But David Woiwod hasn’t always made headlines for the right reasons.
The 40-year-old journalist went viral early in his career at the network when he managed to mispronounce Hollywood megastar Ellen DeGeneres’ name.
Woiwod was doing a live crossover from the US during the 2020 Sunrise segment, when he called out popular talk show host ‘Allan DeGeneres’.
The journalist, originally from Melbourne, pronounced ‘the’ as ‘al’, which is a speech quirk known to many Victorians.
After talking about the coronavirus vaccine during the news segment, Woiwood revealed that DeGeneres had tested positive for Covid-19.

Woiwod made headlines again during the Oscars red carpet in 2021 when he was seen ‘yelling’ at British megastar Daniel Kaluuya.
Seven cameras captured the embarrassing moment when the enthusiastic reporter tried to get the Get Out actor’s attention.
The network’s U.S. correspondent was in the media pit when he saw the 32-year-old Oscar nominee entering the auditorium.
As Covid restrictions made it almost impossible for the media to get close to the stars, David began yelling at Kaluuya from several meters away.
‘Hey, Daniel! Daniel, Australian friend! Daniel! Can we have a quick chat, buddy? How’s it going? he began to shout, while frantically waving one arm in the air.
Daniel, seemingly unimpressed, cautiously made his way towards David, leaving Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Doran stunned.
‘Dan! Dan… You’re broadcasting live in Australia right now,’ the reporter continued, as the actor approached the microphone that had been set up on the red carpet.

Woiwood, as 7NEWS’s U.S. bureau chief, was reporting from the southern Israeli city of Sderot when the broadcast was interrupted by a rocket battle between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists.
When the deadly exchange got too close for comfort, Woiwod ran to safety after telling spectators: ‘Actually, I think we might have to leave now, guys. We have to go. F***.’
After the report ended, viewers saw their screens go black, but Woiwod returned to his post an hour later to update Australians on the situation live.
“It’s an incredibly close situation, which shows that Israel is not in full control of the situation, a fluid situation,” he said of the terrifying encounter.
The tough reporter was announced as Matt Doran’s replacement during Sunrise on Thursday.
Breakfast hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington welcomed Woiwod to their team live on air.
The reporter will start his new job starting this weekend, but it will not be his first time on Breakfast TV, as the main network will choose to promote from within.
