America is famous for its easily accessible fast food – with major national chains becoming more prevalent from coast to coast.
But which of the household names comes out on top when pitted against each other for number of stores across the United States?
In a surprising first place overall, Subway has more stores across America than any other fast food joint – topping the list with 20,603.
The sandwich giant beat out other similar chains for the top spot, with Arby’s in second with 3,402 and Jimmy John’s.
Jersey Mike’s and the popular Panera Bread came next, with 2,494 and 2,125 respectively, while Firehouse Subs, Einstein Bros. Bagel and McAlister’s brought up the rear.

For pizza – an American staple – Hunt Brothers Pizza took gold with 9,240 while Pizza Hut narrowly beat Domino’s for second place – with 6,862 to 6,720
Starbucks takes second place overall and is strongly consolidated as the nation’s favorite beverage store with 15,966, according to figures compiled by StatsPanda.
Smoothie King came in second with 1,133 while Tropical Smoothie Café had 1,013, and Tim Horton’s came in close with 630.
McDonald’s took last place on the podium, with 13,515 stores across the US – Burger King being the closest burger chain to the family favorite with just 7,257 stores.
Wendy’s had the third highest number, with 5,995, and Sonic Drive-In and Jack In The Box had the second highest amount with 3,548 and 2,187 respectively.

Little Caesars has 4,169 and Papa John’s has 3,122, almost a third less than first place.
Things are closer between the chicken chains, where the top three restaurants with the most locations are KFC (3,895), Popeye’s (2,957) and Chick-fil-a (2,928).
For Tex-Mex, Taco Bell is the certified winner with 8,088 stores compared to Chipotle’s 3,175 – with less popular Qdoba bringing up the rear with 735.

KFC reigns supreme in chicken restaurants, with 3,895 stores compared to 2,957 at Popeye and 2,928 at Chick-fil-a
Dunkin’ Donuts reigns supreme as the king of donuts in the United States with 9,412 while Krispy Kreme trailed with just 358.
Panda Express dominates Chinese chains across the country, with 2,239 stores, while Dairy Queen leads the dessert chart with 4,316.
The numbers come as California cult favorite In-N-Out announced the opening of a regional headquarters in Tennessee.
This is the most easterly expansion yet for the company, whose current easternmost state is Mississippi.
The franchises’ rare eastward move comes after years of insisting it didn’t, not expanding rapidly until 1992.
