The Pixel Fold is another ultra-flagship addition to the Pixel lineup, one that represents Google’s first attempt at a foldable phone and takes a page from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 in the “it’s a normal phone that also unfolds into a small tablet division It costs a whopping $1,799 and is due out in July Here’s what you need to know and where to order one for yourself.
Google is making its first real foray into the ultra-premium smartphone market by making its first non-slab smartphone. The Pixel Fold is a foldable phone much like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line, and as such it unfolds from a phone-sized screen to reveal a tablet-sized display inside.
The Pixel Fold shares some design aesthetics with the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, but moves beyond its lesser flagship cousins with its two screens and a slew of extra features. It actually starts out much smaller than other Pixel phones, with a 5.8-inch outer display, opening up to a larger 7.6-inches. And what’s particularly interesting about the Pixel Fold compared to Samsung’s offerings is that it has a wider aspect ratio, so the outer screen doesn’t feel as long and narrow (until you at least rotate it 90 degrees, which then matches the proportions from Samsung). The Pixel’s hinge is also designed to allow secure positioning throughout its 180-degree movement, making it easier to use at different angles.
Inside the Pixel Fold is the same Tensor G2 as the Pixel 7, 7 Pro and now the 7A. And the triple camera array offers specs close to the Pixel 7 Pro, with a 48-megapixel main sensor compared to the 7 Pro’s 50-megapixels, but the main sensor is slightly smaller. So the offering still feels quite Pixel 7 Gen, save for that slick foldability and size.
We’ll have to see how the Pixel Fold stacks up in full in our upcoming review, but if what you see turns you on you can currently pre-order it from Google or Verizon for a pricey $1,799 or up AT&T for $1,879.99. Moving from the base storage of 256 GB to 512 GB (which only comes in black) costs $1,919 at Google And Verizon or $1,979.99 at AT&T.
