A man is expected to be charged with murder after police accused him of setting another man on fire in north-west Victoria.

The men were allegedly involved in an altercation at a property near the town of Wheatsheaf near Daylesford on Tuesday morning, before the 69-year-old victim was set on fire.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died overnight.

The other man, a 63-year-old man from Wheatsheaf, was arrested at the scene and his attempted murder charge is expected to be upgraded to murder.

He will face Ballarat Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police have urged witnesses.
