Nowadays, it can seem like there is no end to the barrage of novel scientific discoveries about how pesticides and antibiotics in food affect our bodies over time, leading to all kinds of chronic conditions, and in some cases, even cancer.
Like many parents today, you may be wondering if you should make the switch from regular baby food products to their organic counterparts. In this guide, I’ll hopefully make your decision a little easier by walking you through what exactly organic food entails and the truth about the health benefits it has on your precious little one.
What is Organic Food?
Food that is labeled “organic” is essentially food grown according to federal guidelines regarding factors like soil quality, chemical additives, the welfare of animals, and more. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, producers of organic goods “rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.”
In simple terms, organic foods are food products grown and processed without chemical treatments like herbicides, pesticides, or antibiotics, which concentrate in the tissues of people who consume them.
Over time, these synthetic chemicals in non-organic foods can lead to dire consequences, like Parkinson’s disease, depression and anxiety, ADHD, cancer, and many other conditions.
If that didn’t sound scary enough, babies are even more susceptible to the damaging effects of these pesticides than adults- meaning they are far more likely to show symptoms of toxic damage. It can even negatively affect their brain development. Sounds like a nightmare, doesn’t it?
Should I Feed My Baby Organic Food?
According to a Stanford University study on the health effects of non-organic vs. organic food on the human body, regular baby food doesn’t often exceed pesticide limits set by the EPA. However, it does note that eating organic baby food may lower your child’s risk of exposure to pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
That said, organic baby food is more difficult to find and more expensive than regular baby food, and not every family is privileged enough to be able to purchase these products on a regular basis.
Just like anything in life, there are good and bad aspects of each option. Therefore, it’s important for parents to weigh the pros and cons of buying regular baby food vs. organic baby food so that they can choose the right option for their child according to their way of life.

Making Organic Baby Food at Home
We know that purchasing commercial organic food products is expensive, and any commercial baby food product can contain unnecessary additional ingredients.
However, organic produce often is cheaper than commercial organic products (a whole 50% cheaper, if you can believe it.) This means that making your own organic baby food at home is a wonderful option for parents wanting the beneficial effects without the crazy costs!
You can also create nutritionally diverse organic baby foods catered to your own child so that your Milk Drunk baby gets nutrients from other places, too! You can’t put a price on that.
Making Organic Baby Food Puree at Home:
- Choose any organic vegetable and fruit produce products of your choice.
- Choose how you want to cook them. You can steam, boil, or roast them- or you can leave it raw!
- Add any additional infant-safe spices for flavor.
- Add ingredients into a blender and add a liquid of your choice to smoothen out the puree. These could include water, breast milk, or any infant-safe beverage.
- Blend until smooth.
Make sure the puree has cooled down enough before you feed it to your little one.
