SCOREBOARD

SAN FRANCISCO – Brett Wisely hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Giants to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday at Oracle Park.

Matt Chapman and Luis Matos also hit home runs to help the Giants (40-43) quiet large groups of Dodgers (51-32) fans scattered throughout the stadium.

Wisely’s hit came moments after he hit a hard line drive that was fouled. Giants manager Bob Melvin questioned the ruling after some replay angles appeared to show the ball bouncing off first baseman Freddie Freeman’s glove.

The referees reviewed the play and the decision was confirmed. Two pitches later, Wisely hit his third home run of the season into the gallery over the right field brick wall as Dodgers outfielder Jason Heyward turned and watched.

Camilo Doval (3-1) earned the win despite blowing a save in the top of the ninth inning that prevented Logan Webb from earning the win. Heliot Ramos missed a flyout in center field, allowing Andy Pages to reach third base. He scored on Jason Heyward’s sacrifice fly to tie the game.

That snapped the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak and marked just the third time in 14 games since September 2023 that San Francisco defeated Los Angeles.

Here are the takeaways from Friday’s game:

Webb says goodbye to a difficult month

Few people are happier about June coming to an end than Webb.

The Giants ace pitched decently against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing five hits and two runs to go along with six strikeouts and three walks.

In five starts this month, Webb has been tagged for 13 runs in 33 innings (3.55 ERA) and allowed 32 hits with 30 strikeouts and six walks.

They’re not horrible numbers by any means, but they’re still below what fans expect from the right-handed pitcher.

On the plus side, Webb moved through the first inning with ease when he got Dodgers leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani to strike out. Webb has struggled mightily in the first innings this season, so a 1-2-3 first was certainly an encouraging sign.

Feast or Famine Boys

Wisely’s homer was the Giants’ third of the game, continuing a weeklong trend that has seen the Orange and Black get stronger one day and go quiet the next.

San Francisco started the week with a multi-homer game against the Cubs on Monday and came up empty the next day. On Wednesday, the Giants hit three more home runs, another home run-free day on Thursday.

The alternate-day theme continued Friday when Matos hit a solo homer deep off Knack in the fifth inning, then Chapman added a two-run homer off reliever Dan Hudson in the sixth.

Matos has been hitting very well since coming off the disabled list last Saturday, and his home run was a continuation of that. Chapman’s home run was his 10thth of the season, tying Heliot Ramos for the team lead.

northNot easy for Doval

Doval has brought the atmosphere of Torture back to Orange and Black.

The Giants closer, who has had extreme trouble pitching in non-save situations, had a chance to close out Friday’s game, but gave up a triple to the first batter he faced when Ramos misplayed the fly ball before Heyward’s sacrifice to tie the game to the next batter.

Doval settled down and got Miguel Rojas to ground out before Gavin Lux struck out on an 88 mph slider.
