MAKE IT MIDI

Dresses are often in the spotlight in the summer, but this year there’s a refreshing change when skirts take center stage. It’s all about the A-line “midaxi,” a term retailers cling to that simply means halfway between long and short.

We continue to call it a midi, which is the most wearable length regardless of your body shape. There are many pleated styles, but I love this simple, full skirt from John Lewis. Overly gathered details aren’t always flattering on the tummy and hips. The soft flare makes ankles look slimmer.

DO THE SKIM

Due to the simple cotton fabric of these skirts, they do not stick, but they shave your figure. They also feel light, are super practical (easy to wash and iron) and can be worn both up and down. Pair it with vibrant accessories for an occasion – Boden now has some great statement earrings.

ALL ABOUT THE WAIST

Australian designer Zimmermann’s floral linen skirt was a catwalk dream and is sure to be a celebrity favorite – the Duchess of Cambridge and Elle Macpherson are already fans of this lovely label.

Rodarte’s versions have a similar 1950s silhouette and are designed to be worn high around the waist. If you don’t have a cropped cardigan, tuck in a top. Look for a thin knit if you want to keep chills at bay, and wear a shirt or body underneath for a smooth line.

GO BIG OR GO HOME

Now’s the time to give bold prints a try, because an A-line skirt will show off a big, vibrant floral like this one perfectly. Zara’s multicolored A-line gives you lots of color options for tops, while the skirt from & Other Stories has deep front pockets that are both useful and pretty – giving it a homey feel.
