Apple & # 39; s iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X have been on sale for a year now and one of the biggest innovations with these iPhones, and the new iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR, is wireless charging.

Updating: The Apple Event 2018 is over and there is still no news about the AirPower. We are not happy with the no show and have put the pen on paper to ask, what is going on?

But you need something to charge it, and your other Apple devices, right? To this end, Apple has created AirPower.

The AirPower is a wireless charging system that allows you to boot your iPhone, Apple Watch 3 and AirPods simultaneously and is presented as a sneak peek during Apple's big event.

These are three devices that are simultaneously being charged wirelessly, a performance that Apple has never achieved.

Of course, Apple has not invented wireless charging here (it has been on Android for years), but Apple brings its own twist to the technology and adapts it to the latest range of devices.

As shown in a video, AirPower starts charging your Apple products almost as soon as they are placed on the mat. On the iPhone X screen, the AirPower interface is displayed so that you can easily read readable updates about the battery life of your devices.

Interestingly, the Apple Watch screen does not display the information about battery life in the video. We imagine that this is a feature that Apple will introduce when AirPower is released, otherwise you always have to have your iPhone on the mat to read.

How AirPower works

The heart of the AirPower system is a thin, oval-shaped path. And although only the AirPods (in their optional housing) fit on the surface, your Apple Watch and iPhone have sufficient freedom of movement.

AirPower works with Qi charging technology, the leading standard for wireless charging on the market.

Although Qi is available in third-party charging mats from Belkin and others, AirPower is Apple's own solution for your new wireless charging needs.

Apple Watch used to use Qi wireless charging, included in a pad manufactured by Apple. With AirPower, however, up to three different devices can be charged at the same time, making it more open than Apple's earlier efforts.

This is also the first time that wireless charging is available for the iPhone, and this is due to the glass backs of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

But AirPower is more than a mat; it is a fully wireless charging system that allows devices to communicate and manage the power consumption between them.

As Apple's head of global marketing Phil Schiller said on the stage at the announcement, this is not possible with other wireless charging systems currently available.

Schiller said: "We hope that people like it, encouraging others to make more sophisticated solutions based on technologies like this."

Apple plans to work with the Qi team in the future to bring AirPower's functions to other charging solutions, Schiller said.

An important question about the AirPower system that remained unanswered is what the mat itself will connect to. There is clearly a wire coming from one side, and it is likely that AirPower will have a charger for the wall and / or USB to let you connect to a computer.

It is also important to note that while AirPower offers fast charging, this feature will not work with the new iPhones. Instead, users can only charge quickly via USB-C, requiring a USB-C to Lightning cable and a USB-C power adapter.

AirPower price and release date

Two important details about AirPower remain unconfirmed: price and release date. It was originally unveiled in September 2017, but it can be a whole year later by the time you can really buy it.

Anonymous sources speaking with Bloomberg have said that the wireless charging mat will appear in September 2018 alongside a new range of iPhones. This was also supported by a report from trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

We originally expected the charging point to be launched before the end of 2017 and then we heard rumors about a launch in March 2018. That did not happen, so if you wait to buy one, you might wait a bit longer.

How much it will cost, chances are that it will be expensive. Apple's original Apple Watch Qi charger costs $ 79 (about £ 60, AU $ 100). The fact that this new mat is charging more devices is likely to increase its price.

In November 2017, a Polish ecomm site named Apple AirPower as the cost of 999 Złotych, which converts to $ 274 / £ 207 / AU $ 356. But items selling so much on this particular site tend to cost $ 199, which prices in the United Kingdom and Australia would be £ 150 / AU $ 260 respectively.

We update this page as more details come to light.
