A massive house explosion has rocked a western Sydney suburb, with residents feared trapped inside.

The explosion occurred on the second level of a house in Whalan, in Sydney’s west, and Fire and Rescue NSW was called to Waikanda Crescent just before 1pm.

Emergency services responded to a call about an explosion in a unit.

The call said the windows were broken and people could be heard screaming.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said the house suffered “significant damage”, and a neighboring house was also affected, the report said. Sydney Morning Herald.

Fire and Rescue NSW is searching for residents in the units, with one person missing and an elderly woman being treated for shock.

Whalan resident Kathleen Morris said the sound of the explosion was massive.

“I heard a big bang and the whole house shook, everyone came out of their houses wondering what had happened,” he said.
