West Ham fearful of last-ditch Newcastle bid for target Nayef Aguerd as Magpies eye double swoop

West Ham fear Newcastle’s latest bid for target Nayef Aguerd as Magpies take double flight from under the Hammers’ noses

  • Newcastle hopes to snatch the defender from the clutches of the Hammers

Newcastle United have made a last-ditch effort to lure defender Nayef Aguerd from the clutches of West Ham, according to a report.

Rennes centre-back Aguerd is expected to undergo a medical at West Ham, while David Moyes looks to bolster his defensive options for next season.

According to the London Evening Standard the Moroccan international has traveled to London and his transfer to the Hammers could be completed by the end of the week.

West Ham are willing to pay an initial fee of £20million, with additions that could see the deal rise to around £30million.

But Newcastle have reportedly gone head-to-head with the Moroccan and a late approach to the Magpies could deter Rennes’ man from moving to the London Stadium.

Should Newcastle kick the Hammers to the 26-year-old it would be a major blow to David Moyes’ summer plans as he had been looking for a left-footed centre-back for some time.

Moyes and his team have also spent time and resources scouting the player and negotiating terms with the Breton club.

Meanwhile, it could spell a double whammy for West Ham if Newcastle seal the signing of Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Areola spent the 2021/22 season on loan at West Ham, playing 18 times under Moyes as a backup to Lukasz Fabianski.

West Ham are interested in making a permanent Areola deal for the Frenchman, but Eddie Howe’s side is also excited about him.

RMC Sports report that Newcastle are making progress towards a deal for the 29-year-old shot-stopper, despite West Ham currently having an option to buy the player.

Areola has yet to agree personal terms with the Hammers, but his £120,000 a week wage at the Parc des Princes could be a stumbling block.
