Traffic has backed up on the West Gate Freeway (pictured) in Melbourne’s east on Friday after a truck caught fire.

Thick columns of black smoke could be seen from the white truck, paralyzing traffic.

Hundreds of motorists returning home from work on the motorway are forced into traffic chaos as a result of the incident.

Vehicles have backed up onto the Monash Highway from the Domain Tunnel, causing traffic delays of more than 55 minutes.

Motorists traveling on the highway heading toward the West Gate Bridge are being diverted to two lanes on the far left leading to CityLink and Todd Road.

Emergency services are currently on scene (pictured) battling the fire and commuters are facing traffic chaos.
