West Coast great accuses senior Eagles players of ‘giving nothing’ and just playing for money as he insists club needs a thorough cleanup after defeat’ putrid” 171 points against the Swans

The West Coast at rock bottom needs a thorough cleanup of coaches and a senior core who play for the money rather than the club, Eagles great Scott Cummings has said.

Cummings, who led the Eagles’ penalty shootout in 1999, says a drastic change is needed as the club reels from a club-record 171-point loss to Sydney.

Coach Adam Simpson has been backed by West Coast President Paul Fitzpatrick, but Cummings says a cleanup is needed.

“I usually hate to see a manager taken off in the middle of a season or at the end of a season,” Cummings told SEN radio on Monday.

“Or the fans shouting ‘we want heads’ and ‘heads need to roll’, stability is probably the number one thing.”

The Eagles players were completely demoralized after their beating at SCG on Saturday

“But with the West Coast Eagles, stability is out the window.

“They need a thorough cleaning. They need new voices, they need new faces.

“And they need players who kick because there are too many at the moment, I’m only talking about senior players, who don’t care – and it shows.”

Cummings called the Eagles’ effort “putrid” in the loss to the Swans, extending the club-record losing streak to 12 games – four of the last eight losses have been by more than 100 points.

“What I saw this weekend was just putrid from senior players who have been around a long, long time and can’t stop saying how much they love the club,” Cummings said.

“Right now I see players playing for money, not for their club, they are playing for contracts.

“There are a handful of players who, if they decide to continue at the end of the year, are playing for money.

“Because there’s no way in the world you can look at what we saw on Saturday and say they care or are proud of their sweater right now.

“For that reason alone, for me, says there has to be change.”
