Werribee are now VFL champions after recording an incredible six-point win over Southport to end their 31-year wait for the competition’s top prize.
The Tigers had to withstand a late charge from the Sharks, which saw them reduce a 26-point deficit with 11 minutes remaining, to hold on for a famous victory, having been 19 points behind before the half-time break.
Werribee eventually won by 10.9 (69) to 8.15 (63), sparking emotional scenes at IKON Park.
It is the first time the Tigers have won the flag since 1991.
Werribee captain Dom Brew, who was named the league’s player of the year earlier this week, was left in tears after the final siren.
“It’s a life’s work, isn’t it? These kids… we won the minor leagues, but we shouldn’t be here. There are a lot of kids under 22 and I’m very proud of them,” he told Channel Seven.
‘He (our coach) gave us a total dressing down (at half-time). One of the best I’ve ever had in my life. Pretty direct. It was what we needed, we were doing stupid things, we weren’t playing the way we should have.

“Never (worry). Never write us off, mate. Some people fall down and don’t get up, but us Werribee boys get up every time and keep going.”
Jack Henderson was awarded the Norm Goss Medal after recording 23 disposals and two goals.
The medal was presented to him by former Werribee star and current Geelong player Shaun Mannagh, who won the award last year with 28 disposals and six goals in the losing team.
