Australia’s Skye Nicolson challenged Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano after the Gold Coaster became world champion for the first time.
Nicolson turned in a dominant performance on Sunday against Denmark’s Sarah Mahfoud in Las Vegas, winning the WBC featherweight title by unanimous decision (100-90, 100-90, 99-91).
The 28-year-old is now a perfect 10-0 in her career and her sights are firmly set on Serrano.
Serrano, who was previously the unified featherweight champion, vacated the WBC belt in protest of the organization’s decision to limit women’s title fights to 10 rounds.
Men fight for 12 rounds in title fights.
“I respect the rules of the WBC, that’s why I continue to box for the WBC belt,” Nicolson said after their fight in Las Vegas.
“But if the only way to fight Amanda Serrano is in 12 three-minute rounds, talk to my team. We’ll make it happen.
“I know what I can do and I want to continue showing it to the rest of the world.”
