Welcome to the strange era

Liberals, then, object to seeing all of these things conflated and demonized. “I think this moment is important for people to speak out,” Phillips says. “We have this weird minoritarianism, this obsession with children and genitals and drag queens and librarians and all of these things that make us wonder, ‘What’s wrong with you? ’”

It’s worth noting that backlash is already brewing. Last weekend, former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy took to X to call the “they’re weird” argument “silly and childish,” adding, “This is a presidential election, not a high school prom queen contest.”

Derek Guy, also known as X’s Menswear Guy, responded to Ramaswamy’s post with a picture of the former candidate and the caption “big ass shoes,” zooming in on what looked like ill-fitting footwear. It was an attempt to call out Ramaswamy’s own weirdness, but two days later Guy posted a new message for X that “the discourse around what is ‘strange’ doesn’t seem very good to me.”

Calling someone “weird” implies that another person is “normal” or deviant, and that has consequences. “This is how trans people are attacked, this is how women who don’t have children are attacked,” Phillips says. Trump and his supporters aren’t going to back down and rethink their actions, and ultimately, “weirdness” could end up being “weaponized in ways that make me nervous later, although I also think not calling out weirdness is dangerous,” she adds.

“Weird works really well as a meme,” Phillips says, “but it doesn’t work as well as a dissemination strategy.”

Katiyar says it will ultimately come down to whether the Liberals, and the Harris campaign in particular, can back up the memes with something else. “Young voters really care about social issues, housing prices, the economy — very important issues,” he says. “So I see[the weird]losing its effectiveness if they don’t continue to change policies to make a difference.” That, to use last week’s buzzword, would be very tacky.

The Italian Olympic gymnast Giorgia Villa is a Parmesan influencer. This is perfect, I don’t have any notes. Please take a look. Photos of her posing with giant wheels of cheese. (Yes, most of these threads are going to be about the Paris Olympics. Sorry, not sorry.)

You’ve probably heard of walking on water, but have you heard of standing on water in the air? Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina He has, and this photo of him doing exactly that has gone incredibly viral.

South Korean female sniper Kim Ye-ji is cooler than you. Everyone thinks the same.

Finally, we would like to leave you with this: A video of gold medal-winning Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles dancing with Snoop Dogg.
