She wrote in the Instagram post: ‘Remission, 100 pounds, + my battle with calciphylaxis – a rare disease I was diagnosed with that completely changed my life and made me question how strong I really was.

Lexi and Danny rose to fame in 2016 after their weight loss story went viral.

The couple, who said “I do” in 2015, weighed a combined 765 pounds and consumed a total of 8,000 calories a day before making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight.

They swapped fast food for homemade food and started going to the gym five to six times a week. In two years, Lexi went from 485 pounds to 173 pounds, while Danny lost 95 pounds from her 208-pound body.

“We didn’t have a diet plan, surgery, personal trainer, but what we did have was each other and the internal motivation to work hard every day,” she wrote in an inspiring Instagram post in 2017.

Lexi noted that they had no idea that six months after their resolution they would become a “completely different couple.”

What is calciphylaxis?

Calciphylaxis is a rare, serious disease in which calcium builds up in small blood vessels in fatty tissues and skin.

Calciphylaxis causes blood clots, painful skin ulcers, and can lead to serious infections that can lead to death. People who have calciphylaxis usually have kidney failure and are on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant. The condition can also occur in people without kidney disease.

Symptoms:

  • Large purple net-shaped patterns on the skin
  • Deep, very painful lumps that ulcerate and create open sores with a dark brown crust that do not heal, usually on high-fat areas of skin, such as the stomach and thigh, although they can appear anywhere.
  • Infections from wounds that do not heal

Causes:

The exact cause of calciphylaxis is unknown, but recent studies have revealed that most people with this condition have abnormalities in blood clotting factors. Blood clotting factors are substances in the blood that help stop bleeding. These abnormalities can cause small blood clots to form more frequently than normal.
