An Antarctic cold front will make residents of southeastern Australia shiver this weekend

Australians living in larger capital cities have been warned to cover up again with more cold, wet and windy weather ahead.

Southeastern Australia is about to be hit by super-cold air from Antarctica that will send temperatures plummeting.

As cold air hits a band of clouds to the northwest, it is expected to bring rain to wide areas.

Sky News Weather forecaster Rob Sharpe said the cold front would make its way across the south-east of the country.

“Melbourne looks windy and then wet,” he said on Friday.

Melbourne’s night-time temperatures will drop especially on Sunday and Monday night, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting they will fall to 6°C with northerly winds of 35 to 50 km/h.

Canberra is expected to experience sub-zero overnight temperatures and a frost is forecast for Monday morning.

Then it will be New South Wales’ turn to shiver, after enjoying a warm 20C temperature on Saturday, quickly followed by a three to four degree drop.

Light southerly to southwesterly winds are expected during the day, which will be even lighter overnight.

“The cold behind that band of rain will spread across New South Wales,” Sharpe said.

‘More wet weather expected for Sydney on Sunday.’

However, the cold snap is good news for skiers.

‘Colder weather is coming. “There will probably be 20cm of snow on most ski slopes, which will be quite useful there,” Mr Sharpe said.

Strong winds are also likely in resorts and surrounding areas throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Rainfall is expected to reach between 40 and 80mm in eastern and central Queensland, including the Goldfields, Coalfields and northern Highlands, but Brisbane and the surrounding region will likely only receive between 5 and 10mm.

Along with cold and sometimes windy conditions, rain is also expected across much of Australia over the weekend.

As well as cold and sometimes windy conditions, rain is also expected across much of Australia over the weekend.

The Capricorn Coast, Whitsundays and central coast of the state could expect some rain.

Adelaide will also feel the impact of the cold front, with lows expected to drop to 6°C over the weekend and 10-20mm of rain expected.

Meanwhile, Perth has been enjoying warmer weather than usual for this time of year, but minimum temperatures will fall below 10C, although daytime temperatures will be around 20C.
