A woman was left furious after her niece decided to elope rather than go ahead with her elaborate destination wedding without telling anyone, leaving her aunt penniless.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that about four years ago her husband’s niece, Jennifer, announced her engagement, and she did so about 14 months before they planned to get married so that everyone had enough time to make travel arrangements.

‘About a month before the scheduled wedding, the bride’s father mentioned, VERY casually, that Jennifer had gotten married over the previous weekend, albeit at a new destination and with a very small number of guests in attendance,’ he wrote in the post shared on Wedding Shaming Subreddit.

“Up until that point, we had never been informed of any new developments or changes to the original plans. No card, no email, NOTHING!” she fumed, adding that they had even received a card with information about the destination wedding seven months before the planned wedding.

“And since we found out about the news after the fact, it was too late to cancel our reservations and/or change our flight,” he added.

‘As a result, we lost quite a bit of money!’

While she acknowledged that “life happens” and “plans change” (and that the couple had changed their wedding plans due to COVID restrictions at the time), she was left scratching her head wondering why they were never informed about the change of plans.

“I think even letting us and the others who were not invited know via a mass email would have been better than having NO communication at all,” the woman said.

The couple ultimately did not attend because it was a short trip just for the wedding and it was not worth the effort if it was no longer taking place.

“It was a breach of etiquette, a lack of consideration and, yes, in bad taste!” she said of the fiasco.

In an update, the woman said Jennifer, her husband and their new baby were in town at the time, but she had no desire to see them.

“My husband told me yesterday that he was going to have dinner there tonight and since Jennifer and others were going to be there, would I like to go with them? I laughed and said, ‘I can’t!'” she admitted.

“As I’ve said before, I’d find it really difficult to even pretend to be nice to her,” he continued. “That’s why I’ll stay away… very far away!”

Reddit users couldn’t believe they were never told the wedding ceremony had been cancelled.

Reddit users were horrified by the selfish decision not to notify guests and sympathized with the woman.

“Wow, what if you hadn’t run into his dad? Or if he hadn’t bothered to mention it?” one person wrote.

Others shared stories of similar situations.

“This happened to me!” another user exclaimed, explaining that a coworker of hers got married a couple of years ago during the summer, so she hadn’t been seen in a month,” another raged.

‘We drove 2 hours to the place and there was no one there!

‘It turns out she cancelled the wedding and her mother was in charge of communicating with the guests, but she couldn’t contact everyone.’

Someone else chimed in: “This is horrible and a reminder to everyone to never, ever, ever say yes to a destination wedding.”

“That’s absurd,” said one commentator.

“They should compensate their guests. I can’t imagine doing something so incredibly rude and selfish.”
