Weather UK: Monthly showers as the sun gives way to thunderstorms

Nearly a month’s worth of rain will fall in 12 hours as sunshine gives way to thunderstorms in the UK.

The Met Office issued new weather warnings for storms and rain on Monday, but the country is likely to still experience weather and temperatures warmer than Monaco.

In West Suffolk, the mercury is forecast to rise above 32 degrees on Monday. But other areas will see downpours, such as the West Country, where a month of rain is expected to fall until 9 a.m.

Dan Stroud, a meteorologist from the Met Office, said: “Monday we expect a nice and hot start with temperatures rising quite rapidly during the morning under strong sunshine in early summer and that is likely to lead to a few thunderstorms .

“In parts of Wales and England, 30mm of rain falls in an hour; In some places 60 mm to 80 mm. In the northern parts of Northern Ireland, southwest Scotland and the Highlands, 20mm to 30mm of rain can fall in an hour during the thunderstorms, with 40mm to 50mm in places.”
