A four-day heat wave will hit the east coast with scorching temperatures rising to 40°C in some cities.

Highs are forecast to exceed 40°C in parts of the Pilbara in Western Australia, up to the coast of South Africa and inland New South Wales in the coming days.

The mercury has climbed to 39C at Port Hedland in WA and will stay in the high 30s and 40s for most of the next week.

The NSW town of Bourke, not far from the Queensland border, is forecast to hit a record four-day streak of 40C from Thursday to Sunday.

The temperature is expected to drop to just 39C on Monday.

A spell of temperatures above 35°C will also affect Dubbo, in west-central NSW, from Thursday to Sunday as the mercury rises to 39°C in Port Hedland, WA.

Four consecutive days of 40 °C temperatures have not been reported until autumn in more than 150 years of records.

Extreme fire danger is forecast for the southern and central mountain ranges of NSW and ACT as hot, dry conditions and cool westerly winds intensify the risk.

A spell of temperatures above 35°C will also affect Dubbo, in west-central New South Wales, from Thursday to Sunday.

This is at least 6C above the March average temperature of 29C.

Sydney will bear the brunt of the heat on Thursday, with highs of 34°C expected in the city center (a Stormcast weather map pictured)

‘Exceptionally high’ temperatures will hit the East Coast just days before the autumnal equinox.

“The protracted nature of the coming heat wave is quite remarkable,” said Weatherzone meteorologist Anthony Sharwood.

Extreme heat will be concentrated in the far west of New South Wales, although temperatures in western Sydney could rise to 40C while the city experiences heat in the mid to high 30s.
