Weather in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: Australians brace for a wet and wild weekend as ‘triple-digit’ rain hits the east coast

A low pressure weather system (shown on this weather map) 250km off the Gold Coast coast continues to push 100km/hour winds along coastal areas.

Strong winds, heavy rain and freezing temperatures will hit south-east Australia this weekend, with some areas experiencing flooding of up to 100mm.

A low pressure weather system 250 kilometers off the Gold Coast coast continues to push 100 kilometer per hour winds along coastal areas.

Towering waves of up to nine meters are forecast along the New South Wales coast, with higher altitude areas hardest hit by gale-force winds.

“We’ve got the wind absolutely whistling off the NSW north coast,” said Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) meteorologist Angus Hines. news.com.au.

‘The heaviest rains are hitting the northeast coast.

“Some places here could see between 70 and 100 millimeters of rain over the next few days, and some of the rain gauges along this strip are likely to see more than 100 millimeters topping those triple digits.”

Northern parts of NSW, the NSW-VIC border and southern regions of Queensland have taken the brunt of the wet and wild weather.

Weatherwatch meteorologists told Daily Mail Australia that the high altitude of coastal areas would prevent waves and heavy rain from wreaking havoc.

Experts predict Saturday should be the last day of severe weather as the low pressure system begins to move away from the Australian coast.

But it could still draw moisture from the coast, causing heavier falls on the Mid-North coast and Northern rivers with the potential for riverine and flash flooding.

Areas closer to the low should begin to experience drier conditions on Sunday, although sunny days are not expected to return until next week.

Rain can still be expected in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide over the weekend as low temperatures dissipate and move away from the coast.

Severe weather warnings remain in place for the south-east Queensland coast, the Darling Downs and the New South Wales coast from Coffs Harbor northwards, where 100km/h winds will wreak havoc.
