Australians will shiver ahead of another freezing weekend as cool temperatures, icy winds and rain continue to lash much of the country.
The cold weather is forecast to continue this weekend as a prolonged cold snap settles into eastern parts of Australia, causing temperatures to plummet.
Widespread frost is expected in the eastern third of the country and will extend to southern Australia and southern parts of the Northern Territory.
It comes after Sydney and Melbourne shivered at 7C and 1.6C respectively on Wednesday, with temperatures “sensible” even lower.
Australians celebrated the winter solstice on Friday, with fewer than 10 hours of sunlight expected today amid frigid temperatures this week.

Sydney
A strong surge of southerly winds along the New South Wales coast will cause temperatures to plummet in and around Sydney this weekend.
Weatherzone meteorologist Yoska Hermanzes told Daily Mail Australia the flurry of strong gusts could reach between 60 and 65km/hour on Saturday afternoon.
“These winds will make the city feel quite cool,” Ms Hermanzes said.
Sydney is forecast to receive gusty winds and rain this weekend with the maximum temperature struggling to get above 14C.
The forecaster said Jervis Bay, Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Coast would be hardest hit by the rain, with temperatures falling to 10C.
“In Sydney, the rain will last until Sunday afternoon,” Ms Hermanzes said.

brisbane
Further north, clouds are expected to form in Brisbane from Friday night.
Strong winds will move north from Sydney to southeast Queensland, where gusts along the coast will reach 40km/hour on Sunday and Monday morning.
On Saturday, Hermanzes said Brisbane would receive some morning and afternoon showers and temperatures would plummet.
“The maximum temperature on Saturday will only reach 17 to 18C, which is quite cold for Brisbane,” he said.
Melbourne
Further south in Melbourne, the weather will remain cold but generally dry this weekend.
On Saturday, the city will be mostly cloudy with occasional morning showers and temperatures reaching only 12C.
Some fog is forecast for Sunday morning before the skies clear and Melburnians can enjoy a dry, sunny day with a light wind.
Temperatures on Sunday are expected to reach just 13°C.

Perth
The Western Australian capital is in for a wet weekend, with up to 20mm of rain forecast for Saturday and up to 2mm of rain on Sunday.
Low temperatures will range between 7°C and 12°C through Sunday.
Adelaide
Friday will be partly cloudy in Adelaide with a chance of morning fog.
Some showers are forecast for the afternoon with temperatures reaching lows of 7C and highs of 16C on Friday.
Over the weekend, some sunshine is expected to peek through the clouds on Saturday before clouds return on Sunday with temperatures expected to reach just 15C.
Rain is forecast for Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane this weekend, with the WA capital set to receive up to 20mm on Saturday.
Canberra
From Friday to Sunday, minimum temperatures are forecast to reach between -1°C and 1°C in the country’s capital.
During the weekend, morning frosts and maximum temperatures of 13°C are expected.
There is also a chance of showers on Thursday and Friday, with 2mm of rain forecast to fall on both days.
hobart
Partly cloudy weather is expected on Friday and over the weekend, with minimum temperatures of 4°C to 6°C and a maximum of 13°C.
Darwin
Australians in Darwin will escape the cold weather with sunny conditions and temperatures remaining in the 30s well into the weekend.
Minimum conditions will see some mornings drop to 19°C.
