Millions of Australians shivered on the coldest morning of the year as a prolonged cold snap sweeps across eastern parts of the country.
Sydney and Melbourne residents faced a chilly 7C and 1.6C respectively, with “sensible” temperatures even lower due to wind chill gusts on Wednesday.
The capitals of Tasmania, Victoria and the ACT also hit frigid temperatures, with Canberrans waking up to -4C and a “feel” of -8C.
On Tuesday, outback Queensland broke its 32-year record for the coldest June morning, when temperatures fell to -5.6C in Tambo and -3.4C in Thangool.
Minimum temperatures in the Sunshine State were between 8°C and 12°C below average on Tuesday, while large parts of eastern Australia on Wednesday saw the mercury fall between 4°C and 10°C below average. average.

Canberra
Canberra residents are in for a freezing rest of the week, with temperatures dropping to -1C on Thursday.
From Friday to Sunday, minimum temperatures are expected to reach between -1°C and 1°C, with morning frost and maximum temperatures of 13°C expected over the weekend.
There is also a chance of showers on Thursday and Friday, with 2mm of rain forecast to fall on both days.
Melbourne
Temperatures in Victoria’s capital will remain at a constant high of 13°C and 14°C for the rest of the week and into the weekend.
The mercury is expected to drop to a chilly 4°C on Saturday and Sunday, with possible rain forecast from Thursday and into the weekend.

Hobart will see its warmest day on Thursday with a high of 17°C, while minimum temperatures will remain between 4°C and 5°C throughout the week.
During the weekend, partly cloudy weather is expected, with minimum temperatures of 4°C to 6°C and maximum temperatures of 13°C.
Overnight temperatures are expected to moderate midweek as a small cold front and associated low pressure system introduce wind and moisture into the mix.
Perth
In Western Australia, Perth residents will expect dry and sunny conditions throughout the week, with high temperatures remaining in the 10s.
However, the capital is in for a wet weekend, with up to 20mm of rain predicted for Saturday and up to 2mm of rain on Sunday.
Minimum temperatures will range between 7°C and 12°C until Sunday.
Darwin
Meanwhile, Darwin residents will escape the cold weather with sunny conditions and temperatures remaining in the 30s well into the weekend.
Minimum conditions will see some mornings drop to 19°C.
