A low-intensity heatwave will affect parts of New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria on Tuesday, but moderate towards the end of the week

Aussies have been warned to prepare for heavy rain, flooding, a heatwave and two possible cyclones in the next week.

A low-intensity heatwave will affect parts of New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria on Tuesday, but is expected to subside towards the end of the week.

Meanwhile, parts of Western Australia are bracing for severe weather ahead of a potential cyclone later this week.

A tropical low currently south of Christmas Island is expected to approach the WA mainland later this week and may develop into a tropical cyclone.

Residents in the Northern Territory’s Top End, including Darwin, and northern Queensland will also experience monsoon conditions and are also being warned of a possible cyclone forming in the coming days.

The tropical low, 09U, has a low risk of becoming a tropical cyclone for the Timor Sea or Gulf of Carpentaria later this week.

Sydney

Patchy fog over Sydney on Tuesday morning is expected to clear for a sunny day with light winds picking up to 20km/h in the late afternoon before easing again in the evening.

Wednesday and Thursday look slightly cloudy ahead of showers on Friday which are expected to continue into next week.

Temperatures in Sydney are set to cool from Friday. A top of 31C is expected for Tuesday, followed by 28C on Wednesday and 31C on Thursday.

The maximum temperature is then expected to drop to 24C on Friday and remain in the mid-20C through the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a dangerous surf warning for the Byron coast in north-east NSW.

‘People should consider staying out of the water and avoid going near surf-prone areas,’ it warned.

A minor flood warning remains in place for the Willara Crossing on the Paroo River, in the state’s central north, following heavy rainfall in Queensland over the past month.

Brisbane

Partly cloudy skies over Brisbane may develop to showers on Tuesday.

Wind speed in the city is expected to reach up to 30 km/h in the morning and become light in the evening.

Partly cloudy weather is expected to remain for most of the week until skies clear on a sunny Friday.

However, the sunshine may be short-lived with a medium chance of showers on Saturday and Sunday.

High temperatures in the city are expected to remain in the high 20C and low 30C.

Several flood warnings remain in place across Queensland.

Moderate flood warnings are in place for Eyre Creek, Diamantina River and Tully River.

Cloudy and windy weather is forecast for Melbourne on Tuesday with wind speeds expected to reach 25km/h.

Temperatures in the city are set to drop from Wednesday with a top of 25C dropping to 20C.

Perth

Weather zone Meteorologist Ashleigh Lange warned that ‘the tropics will wake up over northern Australia this week’.

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, tropical lows and a potential tropical cyclone could all affect WA in the coming days.

Tropical Low 08U is passing south of Christmas Island and is heading towards WA at 24km/h.

“Strong to gale-force winds are likely on Christmas Island today as a tropical low passes to the south,” the agency warned.

The tropical low is expected to approach the WA mainland later this week.

“If the low develops into a tropical cyclone, this will be the fifth named tropical cyclone this season,” Lange said.

“While this low should pass well south of Christmas Island, gales may affect the island at times on Tuesday.”

The cyclone is likely to remain offshore but could affect the Pilbara coast over the weekend.

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of the Goldfields, Eucla and South Interior districts on Tuesday.

The bureau warned that a near-stationary trough is expected to cause heavy rainfall and ‘dangerous and life-threatening’ flooding.

“Six-hour totals of around 80mm are possible with 24-hour totals of 110 to 130mm,” it said.

– Heavy rainfall is likely to continue with this system through the remainder of today and possibly into Wednesday.

‘This is not typical weather for south-east Western Australia.’

Locations that may be affected include Carnegie, Cocklebiddy, Eyre and Rawlinna.

A flood watch has been issued for the East Kimberly, Salt Lake and Nullarbor District rivers, Sandy Desert and parts of the Pilbara Coast Rivers.

The bureau also warned of minor flooding in the Fitzroy River.

Adelaide

Adelaide is set for a partly cloudy and warm Tuesday with a top of 34C and winds of 30km/h mid-day.

Skies over the city are set to turn cloudy on Wednesday ahead of showers on Thursday.

High temperatures are expected to remain in the high 20s and low 30s for next week.

Hobart

Hobart is set to be Australia’s coolest city on Tuesday with a top of just 20C.

Partly cloudy weather is expected to continue into next week along with maximum temperatures in the high teens and low 20s.

The bureau has issued a high wind warning for Frederick Henry Bay and Norfolk Bay, Storm Bay, Channel, Far North West Coast, East of Flinders Island, Upper East Coast, Lower East Coast, South East Coast and South West Coast.

Darwin

Another tropical low, 09U, has a low risk of developing into a tropical cyclone for the Timor Sea or Gulf of Carpentaria.

The current monsoon is intensifying over waters near the northern Australian coast.

“A tropical low may form in the monsoon well northwest of the Kimberley on Tuesday or Wednesday,” the agency said.

“If it forms, 09U is likely to move southeast and cross either the northern Kimberley or the western Top End coast as a tropical low on Wednesday or Thursday.”

There is only a small chance that the system could develop into a tropical cyclone before crossing the coast.

Darwin has a chance of a thunderstorm on Tuesday with possible heavy falls.

Showers are expected to continue until next week as the city’s wet season continues.
