A well-known author’s claim that the monarchy faces the ‘end game’ is today described by social media users as a ‘charge tosh’.

Booker Prize winner Dame Hilary, 68, who caused a stir in 2013 by describing the Duchess of Cambridge with a ‘plastic’ smile, said of the Queen: monarchy believes, and I’m sure she believes with all her heart. ‘

But the Wolf Hall author’s controversial comments have sparked a wave of comments on social media from royal family supporters.

Hundreds have rushed to Twitter today to mount a fiery defense of the monarchy.

One Twitter user said ‘we are blessed’ with the royal family, while another applauded the queen and said the 95-year-old monarch ‘continues to inspire on a daily basis’.

Others disagreed with the author’s prediction that the royal family was nearing the end of its usefulness, with one describing the idea as ‘absurd’.

And one Twitter user said, ‘No! Many people still like them a lot! ‘

Another said: “Hilary Mantel writes brilliant books, fantastic imagination, but everything about real life goes drastically wrong, as has been proven in the past.”

Meanwhile, the user predicted on social media that the popularity of the royal family will increase during Prince William’s reign.

In an interview with Daily Telegraph magazine yesterday, Dame Hilary said she wished the Queen had renounced to make way for Prince Charles.

“I understand she sees this as a sacred task … It’s a conflict because most of the world sees the Royal Family as a branch of show business.”

Reflecting on the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, Dame Hilary said that at the end of any long marriage, ordinary people sought a routine and were ‘able to grieve naturally’, adding, ‘But what recent events are telling us is how far The agreements of the monarchy with the media have turned it into a self-punishing attitude.

No other family is expected to parade a very elderly, newly widowed lady in front of the TV cameras, and yet it is believed that that is what will happen – just as it is taken for granted that a new royal mother beaming on the stairs of the hospital will show up within a day of giving birth.

“There is no legitimate public interest behind it.”

When asked about the future of the Monarchy, she added: ‘I think this is the end game. I don’t know how long the setup will take.
