Wayne Rooney quit Derby ‘to spend more time with his wife Coleen and their four children’

Wayne Rooney’s shocking decision to give up his role as Derby manager was reportedly due to a desire to spend more time with his wife Coleen and their children.

The former footballer, 36, left just three days before the Rams were due to report for season preparation, with local real estate group Clowes Developments making an offer for the club on Thursday following the purchase of Pride Park from former owner Mel Morris.

A source told the mirror: ‘Wayne’s always had pre-season tours, World Cups, Euros. He hasn’t had a summer off since he was a kid himself.

“He wants to spend the summer holidays with his boys. They’re leaving school soon and he just wants to spend a lot more time with them and Coleen.

“Had he stayed at Derby, he would have to go back to work in a week or so to get ready for the new season. That would hardly have given him time with the kids. He just wants to enjoy a whole summer with his kids – it will be the boss.”

While he plans to step back, the insider insisted he would not retire from football for good and said he would return if the right opportunity presented itself.

Wayne and Coleen are parents to sons Kai, 12, Klay, nine, Kit, six, and Cass, four.

MailOnline has reached out to representatives for Wayne Rooney for comment.

Wayne and Coleen are currently enjoying a holiday in Ibiza with a group of friends, including former Manchester United captain Michael Carrick and West Brom manager Steve Bruce’s son Alex.

The pair all smiled as they posed at various scenic locations on the tropical island.

Alongside an Instagram post, Coleen wrote: ‘Magic memories, great friends, lots of belly laughs!! Very much needed’.

The family has made the most of their latest overseas holiday after heading out last week, days after returning from a previous trip to Dubai, to the infamous party island of the Balearic Islands, famed for its boisterous nightlife.

A source said: 'He wants to spend the summer holidays with his boys. They're leaving school soon and he just wants to spend a lot more time with them and Coleen.

The holiday season couldn’t come soon enough for the couple, who have both endured a turbulent year for completely different reasons.

On the pitch, Wayne was powerless to save his bankrupt Derby County side from falling into the obscurity of League One football after suffering a long-anticipated relegation from the championship.

Meanwhile, Coleen has been making daily trips to London from her home in Cheshire for a highly publicized libel case started by Rebekah Vardy after she was outright accused of selling stories about the mother of four to the press.

Coleen and Wayne had spent seven days in London’s High Court when she refuted allegations that she had defamed Rebekah, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

She had accused Rebekah, 40, of leaking stories about her family to The Sun after entangling her on Instagram in an infamous “sting operation.”

Coleen famously revealed in October 2019 how she posted fake stories to her personal Instagram account and changed her settings so that the posts could only be seen by Rebekah’s account.

Each of the false stories then made their way to The Sun newspaper, prompting Coleen to suggest that Rebekah’s account was the source of the leaks.

She defended herself against the charges of defamation in court by insisting her allegations against Rebekah were true.

Rebekah, in turn, claimed that Coleen’s post, which was published while she was pregnant, cost her a book deal and an endorsement for placenta capsules, while also acting as a lightning rod for people to abuse her on social media.

While awaiting the outcome of the trial, Coleen and Wayne have collected air miles, with their stay in Ibiza preceded by a family vacation to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

However, the trip was not without its share of controversy after the pair were criticized for swimming with dolphins in the Arab state, where they stayed in a £7,000-a-night hotel.
