Former England top player Wayne Rooney has claimed he was ‘tricked’ and has filed a complaint with Greater Manchester police after social media was flooded with images of him getting close to a woman in a nightclub and asleep in a hotel room while two half-naked women take pictures around him.

Photos on social media appear to show the married Derby manager, 35, with his arms around the waist of an unknown woman while at a Manchester nightclub. In other images, Rooney appears to be sleeping in a hotel room with at least two half-naked women.

MailOnline understands the footage was taken last night, the first weekend nightclubs in England were allowed to open in more than 15 months due to lockdown restrictions imposed during the pandemic. There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on Rooney’s part.

It is clear that the Greater Manchester Police Department has launched an investigation after Rooney’s lawyers filed a complaint. While his legal team would not confirm which complaint has been made, it is clear that the former England star fears he has been ‘tracked down’.

MailOnline has reached out to the Greater Manchester Police Department for more information. Representatives from Rooney and Derby County Football Club declined to comment.

Rooney has been with childhood sweetheart Coleen for nearly two decades. The couple started dating when they were 16 after dropping out of school, got married in 2008 and have four sons together.

Rooney is currently busy preparing his Derby side for the new Championship season, which kicks off in a fortnight.

But he faces a big challenge ahead of his first game, against Huddersfield, as the team currently has nine senior players registered – two of them goalkeepers.

Yesterday he swore he won’t run away as manager, but the club warned that it would be ‘impossible’ for him to field a team for the start of the new Sky Bet Championship season without significant signings.

The Midlands club is currently under a transfer embargo, preventing them from attracting players, having failed to provide financial details from previous years.

“It’s other people I have no control over who have to make bigger decisions than I do,” Rooney told Sky Sports News.

Rooney is England’s record scorer, scoring 53 times in 119 appearances for the Three Lions. The forward spent much of his club career with Manchester United, scoring 183 goals in 393 appearances.

Rooney also won 16 trophies at Untied, where he moved at the age of 18 after completing a £25 million move from his youth club Everton. He also earned numerous personal awards, including the 2009-10 PFA Player of the Season award and five Premier League Player of the Month awards.
