A documentary on Wayne Rooney’s managerial career could be scrapped amid the former Manchester United star’s problems in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

Argyle sit 21st in the Championship after a run of just one win in their last nine games, which included a series of tough defeats to the likes of Cardiff, Norwich and Bristol City.

This has led to speculation that the former Derby County and Birmingham City manager could be sacked, with Plymouth’s next two matches against Oxford and Swansea said to be crucial in determining whether the 39-year-old remains in his job.

An exit from Home Park could also have ramifications off the field, with a report claiming that a documentary showing Rooney’s rise to the world of management could be canceled if his fortunes do not change.

According to a television insider, who spoke with The sun: ‘The aim of the documentary was to celebrate his transition from player to coach. But obviously, if that ends up being more of a horror show, then the creators, or Rooney themselves, can cancel the project.

The documentary is made by Lorton Entertainment, who also produced The Real Wagatha Story, which delved into the highly publicized legal battle between his wife Coleen and Rebekah Vardy.

The producer also participated in the 2022 show about Rooney’s career that aired on Amazon Prime.

Since taking over at Home Park in May in what is Rooney’s fourth managerial role after spells with Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, the 39-year-old has won five of his 20 games and lost 10.

Following Argyle’s 4-0 thrashing of the Robins on Saturday, chairman Simon Hallett denied reports that Rooney faces the axe, saying The Plymouth Herald: ‘What we are going to do is not think about getting rid of it and changing it.

‘We are thinking about how we can support it. “So there are no conversations about replacing Wayne, but there are conversations about how we can support him to help him become the great coach that we believe is there.”

Hallett also insisted that Rooney, who is currently dealing with a major injury crisis, would be given money to spend in the transfer window as the club looks to move away from relegation problems.

Despite his difficulties on the pitch, Rooney has proven popular with Plymouth fans, who have welcomed his efforts to integrate into the city, while they have enjoyed some impressive wins against Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland along the way.

However, it is Plymouth’s away form that remains a major issue, with the Pilgrims having lost eight and drawn two of their last 10 away games, conceding 27 goals in the process.

Rooney spoke about the difficulties his team is facing following their most recent defeat, saying: “I’ve tried to attack the players,” he said. ‘I have tried to encourage and support them. I’ve really tried everything, so I have to keep trying to find the right balance to fix away performances.

‘I’ve been criticized since I was 16, throughout my career. What you always want are weapons to defend yourself with. At the moment we don’t have any.

“So we have to take it seriously and hope to overcome this, because the last two games have without a doubt been the hardest and most difficult week of my coaching career.

“So I need to find a way to get through it, but also get that message out to the players to make sure I lift them up.”

Despite Hallett’s words of support, Plymouth host Oxford, the only other Championship team yet to win away from home this season, on Saturday in what is a big game for Rooney.
