Wayne Rooney has branded Tottenham’s decision to fire longtime manager Jose Mourinho as ‘crazy’.
Spurs fired their Portuguese coach just six days before meeting Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, and Rooney believes there’s no one better to outsmart Pep Guardiola than Mourinho.
Derby County boss, who worked at Manchester United under Mourinho, warned Spurs chief Daniel Levy is taking a huge gamble.
Wayne Rooney says it is ‘crazy’ that Tottenham has fired manager Jose Mourinho
“I think it’s crazy to do it for a cup final,” said Rooney. ‘It’s strange timing anyway. They could have waited until after the cup final if they wanted to.
‘Mourinho is a manager who loves to win trophies, it shows. He has won many trophies during his career.
If there was one manager who put together a team to play against Man City in a cup final, it’s Jose Mourinho. Tottenham hasn’t had the best of seasons so it’s crazy and a huge risk from that point of view.
Rooney played at Manchester United under Mourinho and is confident that he will be back
“I’m sure Daniel Levy could have waited until the day after the game, that would have made more sense if they wanted to get rid of Mourinho.”
Rooney believes Mourinho’s departure will be met with mixed feelings among the Tottenham players, but there will certainly be no shortage of clubs willing to hire the 58-year-old.
“It depends on the players,” he added. ‘I have been there myself. Some players will get encouragement from the decision and some players will be angry. It is purely up to each player individually.
‘What often happens when a manager is fired and someone comes in, and often you get a good response.
Rooney says Spurs ‘could have waited’ until after the Carabao Cup final before making the decision
Jose is a fantastic manager. One of the best managers the game has seen. Unfortunately his time at Tottenham has come to an end, but I am sure he will bounce back and I am sure there will be many top clubs looking to bring him in.
‘It is purely up to him if he wants to come to another club in England, I am sure there are many clubs around the world who would like him …’
Rooney played under Mourinho at United in the 2016-17 season, in which he won the Europa League and the League Cup.
Mourinho was appointed Tottenham boss in November 2019 and oversaw sixth place in the Premier League last season, leaving the club currently in seventh place.
Tottenham were eliminated from the Europa League in dramatic circumstances by Dinamo Zagreb, while they were also beaten by Everton in the FA Cup.
Despite playing against Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday, Tottenham’s focus will be on the Carabao Cup final when they get the chance to win their first trophy since 2008.
This is the first time that Mourinho has left a club as a manager in English football without having won a trophy.
It will be intriguing to see what the 58-year-old’s next move will be as he seems to show that he can still be a successful top-level manager.
RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers have both been linked to the Tottenham job.
