Against VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund gambled away a victory they thought was certain in the final minutes. BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke missed the dramatic final phase.
When Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavropanos saw the yellow-red card in the 39th minute when the score was 2-0 for Dortmund, BVB probably thought they were on the sure winning side.
Even when Tanguy Coulibaly (78th) made it 2-1, the BVB officials did not see the victory in jeopardy. At least, according to “Sport1”, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke left the Mercedes-Benz Arena shortly after the VfB goal.
The 63-year-old probably didn’t expect such a dramatic final phase. His place remained empty after VfB’s goal. Next to Watzke, however, were President Dr. Reinhold Lunow, Chief Advisor Matthias Sammer, Head of Marketing Carsten Cramer and Jan-Henrik Gruszecki, Head of Strategy and Culture.
In the 84th minute, ten Stuttgarters equalized with a goal from Josha Vagnoman. But Gio Reyna countered the Swabians’ drive to catch up, scoring in the 92nd minute to make it 3-2. Only five minutes later, with the last attack of the game, Silas Katompa Mvumpa equalized again and caused BVB to go into shock.
Kehl and Terzic with clear criticism
Sports director Sebastian Kehl relentlessly criticized his team after the game. “I just have a complete incomprehension about this second half. It’s a big disappointment, frustration, a certain aggressiveness that I just felt after the game. I have to let it sink in first. We’ve broken a lot,” he said after the game.
Coach Edin Terzic was also served after the draw: “It’s difficult for me to find the right words, it’s extremely difficult for me to express what I feel, there’s far too much anger and disappointment to give a clear, factual answer. “
