Wattle Ridge, Bargo: Tragic development as body of missing bushwalker is found two weeks after he mysteriously vanished in bushland

A hiker was tragically found dead after going missing almost two weeks earlier on what was supposed to be a day hike.

Police announced on Thursday afternoon that the search for Darren Banks, 57, had come to an end after his body was found in bushland south of Campbeltown, southwest of Sydney.

He was last seen in good health and well prepared for the walk at a house in Macquarie Fields, in Sydney’s southwest, about 4pm on Friday, March 15.

His family andHe was expected to return home the next day, but he was reported missing the following Tuesday and could not be contacted for 13 days.

Police thanked the local community for their help in the search for Mr Banks and confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police confirmed they arrived at the hiking trail after finding their car parked 80 kilometers away, near the Starlights Trail in Wattle Ridge, south of Sydney, 15 kilometers west of Bargo, last Thursday.

Mr Banks is understood to be familiar with the walking trail, but it is considered difficult terrain.

‘It is now a fairly remote place deep in the bush. “There aren’t many people out there,” Detective Inspector Andrew Mackay said.

However, there is significant access to fresh water and the family said they were in “very good health” before leaving home two weeks ago.

SES teams have assisted in the ground search over the past week, although no trace has been found to date.

Detectives were able to track his movements before he left Macquarie Fields on Friday and say he visited the shopping center later that day.

“He made some purchases, but there are no purchases that would help (our investigation) more,” Detective Mackay said.

Police believe he may have been walking towards Ahearn Lookout or the Emmets Flat camping area, about an hour south of Campbelltown.

Police have serious concerns for Darren’s welfare as it is considered out of character for him to not be in contact with his family.

Darren is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of medium build, about 180cm tall, with short brown hair and a beard with brown eyes.
