Hundreds of wildfires are still raging across Canada, with emergency services battling to bring the blazes under control.
Dramatic footage shows fires spreading across vast swaths of forest as the country grapples with the worst start to its wildfire season on record.
Hot and dry conditions have increased the risk of wildfires, with nearly 800,000 acres affected.
Blankets of smoke caused by the fires also moved further south across the US on Friday.
Apocalyptic scenes have been seen in New York as the thick yellow fog descended over the city.
While conditions in the city began to deteriorate on Friday, air quality remains “unhealthy” with some schools remaining closed and sporting events postponed.
More than 111 million people in the United States were living under air quality warnings because of the fires, the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday.
The National Weather Service said some improvement is expected this weekend.
