ANAHEIM – Well, you don’t see that every day.

The A’s, almost impressively, failed to score while a runner crossed the plate, appropriate considering their recent road game.

In the second inning of the A’s game against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday at Angel Stadium, Kyle McCann stumbled and missed after hovering around third on Max Schuemann’s double.

The A’s catcher would eventually be ruled out, not because of the mishap, but because of a subsequent one.

After a lengthy replay review, McCann was criticized for making contact with his new A’s teammate, Armando Alvarez (the baseball gods really are hard on Oakland).

Alvarez, who made his first MLB start on Tuesday, was trying to help his A’s teammate stay on his feet, while McCann followed him on the base path, eager to score.

Unfortunately for Alvarez, despite natural human instincts and reflexes, he erred in making contact with McCann, resulting in the final out of the inning.

The A’s were prepared for a big inning with the top of the lineup closing in, but instead they let the Angels get away easily. To make matters worse, Los Angeles didn’t even score a shot on the plate, an unforced embarrassment on Oakland’s part.

The A’s, losers of four straight and in the midst of a 10-game road losing streak, their worst streak of the season, could really do without harmful drama. Oakland has also lost four straight series in Anaheim.

For the moment, the A’s seemed to be on the right track heading into the current series finale. But instead of fist bumping and high-fiving in the dugout for what was supposed to be a 2-0 lead for Oakland, their young duo probably got a prime spot on the blooper reels.

McCann and Alvarez, two rookies, surely won’t make the same mistakes again, right?
