Metropolitan Police Lieutenant Shane Lamond exchanged several messages ahead of the 2021 attack, even telling him he ‘personally supports’ the extremist group
Lamond was responsible for monitoring groups like the Proud Boys when they came to Washington for protests, and had served as an intelligence officer for the city’s police department.
He is accused of obstructing an investigation into the destruction of a Black Lives Matter banner by Tarrio in December 2020.
The senior officer is accused of making false and misleading statements to federal law enforcement regarding the investigation.

Lamond was indicted by a grand jury in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia on one count of obstruction of justice and three counts of misrepresentation.
He worked as a supervisor of the intelligence branch of the MPD’s Office of Homeland Security and was in regular contact with Tarrio from July 2019 to January 2021.
The indictment claims Lamond began using Telegram in July 2020 to leak information to Tarrio about police activity surrounding the Proud Boys.
