Glasgow Warriors coach Franco Smith is confident the game against Racing will go ahead

Franco Smith is confident Glasgow can overcome the big freeze and host this weekend’s Champions Cup clash against Racing 92 at Scotstoun.

Temperatures in the area are expected to reach -7°C, which will affect a pitch that is not protected by underfloor heating.

The Warriors moved a Challenge Cup tie against Perpignan to Murrayfield two years ago in similar conditions after admitting it was not possible to “maintain a safe surface”.

Smith, however, was optimistic about this going ahead as scheduled as his team look to take another step towards booking a place in the last 16.

The coach said, “Look, we obviously anticipated this.” Last week we started covering the field and monitoring the temperature.

Smith revealed that Glasgow had been covering the Scotstoun pitch to protect it from frost.

“On Monday we covered the field to protect it from frost. It was not about thawing the playing field. It was all about keeping the frost away from the start, before the real cold weather hit, and they’ve done a brilliant job with that.

“I’ve been on the field this morning about eight or nine times. The referees have already been here too. I think it’s even softer now since we’ve covered it and it has some heaters. The ground crew is doing a tremendous job there.

‘We’re excited the game is here. Obviously the alternatives are there, but we are confident. Just an hour ago they told me that we are more than confident and that we, as players and a team, are confident in going out and everything will be fine. It will be better than it was before.’
