Ward staying away from 49ers; CMC and Jennings are limited in practice originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
SANTA CLARA— Cornerback Charvarius Ward stays away from 49ers while mourning the recent death of his daughter.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said he hasn’t talked to Ward about any timetable for his return to the 49ers.
Amani Joy Ward passed away on October 28, just before her second birthday. A service is planned for Friday in Dallas, Shanahan said.
Meanwhile, the 49ers appear to be on track to get two offensive skill players back into action.
Running back Christian McCaffrey and receiver Jauan Jennings were scheduled for a limited practice Wednesday afternoon, Shanahan said.
If both players make it through the week without issue, they will likely be major contributors again when the 49ers return to action on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McCaffrey, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year last year, missed the first eight games of the season due to bilateral Achilles tendinitis.
He remains on injured reserve, although the 49ers designated him to return Monday.
Jennings has been out since suffering a hip flexor strain in the 49ers’ Oct. 10 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Jennings had 25 receptions for 404 yards and three touchdowns in the 49ers’ first six games of the season.
The 49ers expect kicker Jake Moody to return to action this week after missing three games with a sprained right ankle. San Francisco released its emergency kicker, Anders Carlson, from the practice squad on Tuesday.
Defensive tackle Kevin Givens remains concerned with a core muscle injury in the groin area. He 49ers acquire defensive tackle Khalil Davis in a trade with the Houston Texans on Tuesday to provide more depth on the line.
Furthermore, the 49ers open practice window for defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos. The 49ers placed him on injured reserve due to a knee injury on October 5.
Here’s the preliminary participation report for Wednesday’s practice via Shanahan:
