Now, just over two weeks into the 49ers’ training camp, Ward appears to be in a good rhythm practicing and improving against his teammates.

After all, with the frequent fights and altercations that come with joint practices, plus the fact that you spend a few extra days on the road, it’s hard to blame him for preferring the relative convenience of Santa Clara.

“I just want to stay in my comfort zone,” Ward explained. “We can focus on ourselves and get better, compete with each other. I think we would have done just as well there as we did here.”

“I just like being home, being up here.”

Given the 49ers’ abundance of stars across the roster, Ward isn’t concerned about the need for added competitiveness or tension that joint practices can generate.

“I feel like we have some of the best intensity practices in the NFL,” he said. “I’ve been on a couple of teams; obviously Kansas City definitely practices really hard, but I feel like we match the intensity that they practice with.

“We’re always going to push ourselves every day in training to improve more and more. We measure ourselves, so I think that’s the best thing for us, in my opinion.”

Likewise, St. Francis Defensive Coordinator Nick Sorensen He had no qualms about making the decision.

“The decision was about what’s best for the team to prepare for Week 1,” Sorensen told reporters after training The camp practice concluded Wednesday. “I think it was the right decision, and the way (Shanahan) explained it to everybody was exactly how he felt.”
