Yikes! Restaurant servers have shared details about the most awkward dates they’ve seen on the job – and just reading them is enough to make anyone cringe
Some of the awkward stories that waiters shared were harmless enough, such as awkward but harmless physical contact.
“I once saw a man shake his date’s hand as she reached out to get some bread,” one writes.
Another met a young couple who, given the circumstances, probably shouldn’t even have bothered on the date.
“I had a teenage couple who were accompanied by a parent,” they wrote.
One of them was unlucky to witness a breakup – which occurred at the start of the meal.
“He dumped her at the beginning. Girl cried while giving her order. They ate their entire meal, dessert and all, ”they said.
Another break was even more spectacular, as it came after a surprise proposal.
“ This man waited for his’ fiancé ‘to show up, but got down on his knees and proposed the moment she sat down,’ wrote the former Olive Garden waiter. I knew immediately from the look on her face that it was going downhill very quickly.

Set the mood! Two poor teens on a date had the romance spoiled by a parent who came along to counsel
Impeccable timing: a guy with very bad timing broke up with his girlfriend before they even ordered – but they still got food and ate it
Everyone could hear them arguing, but most of the time you could hear the woman say repeatedly, ‘YOU KNOW HOW LIKE ****** FEELS ABOUT HIM! The fight went on until I heard a loud ‘OHHHHHH !!!’ heard. She threw a whole plate of pasta at his face.
She stormed out, he followed, and finally the police came to arrest the woman. I assume she was arrested for aggravated assault or something. ‘
Another man specifically planned to break up with his girlfriend at the restaurant, even calling ahead to ask if they had a quiet place for an important conversation.
‘I just thought he meant a business meeting – no. Apparently he wanted to break up with his eight-year-old girlfriend, ”said the waiter. Halfway through she started screaming and had to be escorted outside. He eventually stayed and met a new date about an hour later. ‘
In one case, it was the waiter, not either person on the date, who made it uncomfortable. The waiter said they were a young man no older than 25 and a woman in her early 60s or late 50s.
“Halfway through their meal, I went to look at them and ask,” Well, are you going out with Mommy today? ” They both turned with straight faces and the young man replied, “She’s my friend.” I whispered an apology and just peeled myself away, ‘they said.
Oh no! In this case, the waiter made it uncomfortable, assuming an older woman and younger man were mother and son – but they were really on a date
Learned a lesson! When a man showed up for a date in a suit and teen sneakers, his date left before he could see her – and the waiter had to deliver the bad news
A waiter watched in horror as a woman went on a date with a man – and the ghost of her late husband.
‘We had a middle-aged lady come in with a gentleman. They asked for three menus, ‘they wrote.
I walked over to the table to introduce myself and ask if they were still waiting for a table. The woman said no, her husband is here, and then the two at the table physically ordered drinks and water.
‘The lady explained to me that her husband had passed away a few years ago, and this man (a friend) kept asking to go out. So she said yes, but insisted that her DEAD HUSBAND come with them. That’s why they had three menus. ‘
In addition, the woman insisted that the waiter approach her late husband and take his order for dinner.
One waiter recalled a man who had no idea of a date in a gray suit and running shoes “where every toe goes in a separate place like toe stockings.”
It was such a turnoff that the woman saw him, turned and left before he even noticed she was arriving. What made it uncomfortable was that the waiter had to tell the man why his date had left.
Another man was not only clueless but downright rude.
It was clearly a blind date. Neither of them felt comfortable. I dropped off drinks, they were both polite, then I dropped off the food, asked how everything was, ‘the waiter said.
The man rolled his eyes and said, ‘Well, the food is great. I wish she talked more. The girl’s face turned tomato red, and I handed over the check shortly afterwards. Poor girl. ‘
Finally, a waiter remembered working in a “very upscale French restaurant in NYC” when two cheating husbands collided with each other.
A middle-aged man and a young woman had just received their entree when the man’s face turned pale.
His date noticed and turned to see what he was looking at. The man’s wife was sitting at another table – also on a date with her side dish – on the other side of the restaurant, ‘the waiter wrote.
The woman sees him and has the same expression on her face, which quickly turns to anger. She walks briskly to his table and begins to whisper to him, pointing her finger straight in his face. He begins to do the same to her. ‘
While the man’s date seemed “ absolutely hurt, ” the woman’s date acted like “ nothing was wrong ” and just kept eating.
