Volunteers from the Sudanese Red Crescent provide assistance to a hospital in Khartoum

Date:

Some of the medical equipment provided by the volunteers to the hospital is used for minor surgeries, in addition to a small emergency room, amid warnings of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Volunteers and staff from the Sudanese Red Crescent provided medical equipment and staff to Alban Jadid Hospital in the Sharq al-Nil district of Khartoum.

Sudan’s hospitals suffer from an acute shortage of medical supplies and staff, and dozens of them have been closed due to the fighting that has been going on for weeks in the country.

Some of the medical equipment provided by the volunteers to the hospital is used for minor surgeries, in addition to a small emergency room, amid warnings of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

On Thursday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimated that at least 190 children have been killed and 1,700 others injured in Sudan since the outbreak of the conflict about three weeks ago.

Although calm prevailed on Monday morning in the capital, Khartoum, negotiations called for by Saudi Arabia and the United States, which are currently being held in Jeddah, do not seem to be going as desired. “You haven’t made much progress,” said a Saudi diplomat inside the negotiations. He added, “A permanent ceasefire is not on the table. Each side believes that it is able to resolve the battle.”

The army commander, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Daglo, sent their representatives to the city of Jeddah on Saturday to hold talks, which Washington and Riyadh described as “initial talks.”

Sudanese and Saudi officials provided little information on the schedule or duration of the talks.

And on Sunday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, arrived in Jeddah with the aim of meeting representatives of the two parties to the conflict, but his role in the negotiations is not yet clear.
