Volkswagen unveils ID.3, its first "electric car for the masses"

Volkswagen has rolled out the final version of its first affordable long-distance electric car, the ID.3, at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2019. Comes out to "under € 30,000" (currently about $ 33,180), the ID.3 comes in three variants with a range of approximately 205 to 340 miles. The EV is expected to be delivered by mid-2020.

The price tag of "under € 30,000" that VW is promoting applies to the basic model of the ID.3, which has a 45kWh battery and offers a range of 205 miles. The company refused to provide price information for the two larger capacity variants of the car, with batteries of 58 kWh and 77 kWh, and offers approximately 261 and 340 km per charge respectively.

VW says that the basic version of ID.3 only charges up to 50 kW and that owners who want to charge faster (up to 100 kW) have to pay extra; 100kW charging is standard on the middle class 58kWh version, while even faster 125kW charging is available on the top ID.3.

The ID.3, which resembles the popular Golf hatchback from the German automaker, has the potential to be a very important car for VW. It will be the first vehicle built on the company's new modular, all-electric platform, a vehicle that drives dozens of cars & SUVs waiting in the wings as part of the multi-million dollar push in EVs of the larger Volkswagen Group.
