Volkrug guides Germany to a friendly victory over Peru

Date:

Striker Niklas Volkrug scored twice to lead Germany to a 2-0 victory over Peru in a friendly football match at the start of its preparations for the European Championship, which it will host next year.

In the first match since exiting the group stage at the World Cup last year, Germany relied on strikers with Volkrug and Timo Werner, and played particularly effectively in the first half.

But she struggled at times, lost the ball several times and struggled to deal with Peru’s high pressure.

Volkrug, 30, opened the scoring after a chest pass from Kai Havertz in the 12th minute. Volkrug had scored Germany’s last World Cup goal.

Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Galici saved Florian Virts’ shot and then followed up the ball from Werner.

Werder Bremen striker Volkrug, who made his debut for Germany days before the World Cup, added his fifth goal in five matches after a cross from newly signed Marius Wolf in the 33rd minute.

Substitute Serge Gnabry hit the crossbar on the hour mark, and Havertz missed a penalty kick when he hit the post in the 68th minute.

Germany plays Belgium in Cologne next Tuesday.
