Hidden iPhone and Airpods feature everyone needs to know
- Apple users can turn on Voice Recognition to detect sounds of interest
- This feature can alert users to fire alarms, crying babies, sirens, and more
Apple iPhone and iPad users have access to a special “hidden feature” that can identify emergency situations occurring around them.
Voice Recognition can distinguish many important sounds – such as fire alarms, ambulances, smoke alarms, sirens, dog barks, and more.
Easily toggled in the Settings app, your iPhone or iPad can listen for certain sounds and notify you when it identifies them.
The feature is especially useful for those with hearing impairments and auditory processing disorders as it keeps tabs on their surroundings.
Starting with iOS 16, users can add custom alarms, hardware sounds, and doorbells to your device.

The special feature is also suitable for healthy people who simply want to listen to their music out loud or get out of their surroundings.
AirPods users whose devices support noise cancellation can benefit greatly from this aspect.
Voice recognition is available on devices running iOS 14 and later.
To turn on the feature, you first have to go to the Settings app.
Voice recognition is buried in the “Hearing” section of the Access Center.
Once the feature is enabled, you can tap the Sounds menu to customize the specific sounds for which you want to receive alerts.
After setting up Voice Recognition, you won’t have to worry about missing your dog’s barking or the whistling of kitchen appliances.
You can also add your own sounds by recording them to your device.
The iPhone will need to listen to your custom voice five times in order to “recognize” it.
Users can also click the shortcut in the Control Center to disable notifications to suit their needs.

Many were thrilled with the practicality of the voice recognition.
“I can’t hear that well and I love that feature,” said one man. “It’s very helpful especially since I live alone.”
I found this out because of my deaf friend – he uses this on his watch so he can spot his baby crying. Thanks Apple!
“It helps a lot when I have my headphones in my ears.”
