The Norwegian royal family is currently under scrutiny after Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son was arrested when “a night of alcohol and cocaine” allegedly ended in violence and destruction.

The popular princess’s eldest son, Marius Borg Høiby, was arrested for the first time on August 4 after being reported for violence, threats and vandalism.

He has since been arrested on other charges including death threats and harassment, as well as violating a restraining order.

The 27-year-old released a statement about his arrest through his lawyer Braitlin, which was shared with Norwegian outlet NRK, where he admits to having problems with drugs and mental health.

“I have several mental disorders, which means that throughout my education and adult life I have had and continue to have problems. I have struggled with substance abuse for a long time, something I have been in treatment for in the past. I will now resume this treatment and take it very seriously,” he said.

He said he wanted to “be responsible for what he had done” and “explain himself honestly to the police.”

“Something happened that should never have happened. After an argument, while intoxicated and on cocaine, I hurt people and destroyed objects in an apartment,” he said.

According to Oslo police, two ex-girlfriends have also filed charges against the stepson of the future king of Norway.

“The charge against Høiby has been extended. There are currently four victims in the case. The Oslo Police District is investigating the case with the highest priority,” the police statement read.

‘For the victim of the Frogner incident, the charges have been expanded to also include reckless behaviour and breach of a restraining order, in addition to another previous case of bodily harm.’

‘For victims Juliane Snekkestad and Nora Haukland, the charges each include one case of abuse in close relationships.’

Høiby is also accused of making threats against another person. The complaint in this case has been filed by the police.

He spent 30 hours in police custody after the original altercation on August 4, and local media claimed to have photos showing a knife stuck in the wall of the apartment.

Høiby is no stranger to scandal and “stepped away” from his official royal duties at age 20 following a series of scandals.

Her mother apparently decided to skip the trip to the Paris Olympics to stay with her son, whom she had before marrying into the royal family.

She had previously described her firstborn as a “vital member” of the family.

“He has always had a public role that has been very difficult to define,” he added.

Although Crown Prince Haakon told reporters that the matter was serious, he would not go into details of the case.

Høiby was hunting with friends when he was arrested for allegedly violating one of his victims’ restraining orders.

Danish lawyer Mette Grith Stage spoke to tabloid BT about the case and said it is unusual for members of any royal family to be involved in such matters.

“It is clear that if this continues, preventive detention may become appropriate, as it is the only way to keep him at bay.”
