Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez can be the best defensive collaboration in the history of the Premier League
MARTIN KEOWN: Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez can be the best defensive cooperation in the history of the Premier League … they have conceded one goal in 990 minutes!
- Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez will want to protect the silverware to make it back up
- Liverpool’s back line was broken once every 990 minutes of the competition match
- A broken leg curtailed the Gomez 2018 season and we didn’t get access to them
- Now, after Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren took turns, Gomez is back with Van Dijk
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez can be the best defensive collaboration in the history of the Premier League.
They will want to protect the silverware to back it up, but they collect the clean sheets.
Since being restored as Jurgen Klopp’s favorite center-couple in mid-December, Liverpool’s back line has been broken once – a single goal conceded in a 990-minute competition match. It is unbelievable.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could be the best centerback combination in the history of the Premier League
Joel Matip (C) was a mainstay in Liverpool’s defense before Gomez flew back inside
Speaking of them in 2018, I said they almost play music. That is because they are so flexible and in combination.
Then a broken leg curtailed Gomez’s season and we were not allowed to see them together.
Now, after Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren take turns working with Van Dijk, Gomez is back.
Dutchman Van Dijk is 28, while England’s Gomez is 22 – and their talents are very similar.
Their pace is frightening and they exude class in the way they travel around the field.
Van Dijk, second in Ballon d’Or, clearly is ahead of his teammate. He is stronger in the air and of course more a leader. But Gomez is not far behind. They work brilliantly together and we finally get the chance to see that.
Liverpool only admitted once in the 990 minutes while marching to the league title
