Knock Knock!
A man got a nasty surprise last week when a black rat snake bit him on the head as he tried to open the front door and get inside.
The man, who was wearing shorts, a black T-shirt and carrying a bright orange water bottle, made his way to his front porch, where he proceeded to open the front door.
When she opened the screen door, the black snake she didn’t initially notice was hanging at the top of the frame, until it appeared to bite her head.
The middle-aged man felt the bite and immediately jumped back, touching the back of his neck where the reptile struck him.
When he realized what had happened, he yelled, ‘They bit me!’
Rat snakes are not venomous and are not generally considered dangerous, although they may bite as a last option if confronted or believed to be trapped.
In a state of panic, the man backed away, tripping on the step leading up to the front door, falling, losing a shoe and rolling across the grass, before yelling again, “I got bitten.”
Fortunately for the man whose embarrassing moment was captured by his Ring camera, the snake hanging from the door was not venomous and the man was ultimately okay, if a bit bruised.
The man’s son, Stevie Haven, lovingly posted the entire incident on TikTok, where the video has amassed over 33 million views.
In a second video Haven uploaded, he and his father’s girlfriend are seen returning to the house, at an unknown location, moments before the biting incident.
‘This was before dad came in haha I drank too much and never saw the snake. He bit his girlfriend on the head too,” Haven captioned the video.
In that video, a woman is seen walking onto the front porch with Stevie trailing behind her. According to her caption, Stevie appears to be somewhat intoxicated and without shoes.
As the couple enter the house, the black snake can be seen hanging in the background, though neither noticed its presence.
The animal appears to pounce on Stevie, who entered the house second, though he missed and Stevie, not paying particular attention to detail at the time, walked unmolested.
The girlfriend closed the door behind him, before her boyfriend walked to the door.
After the man was bitten, he went back to his front porch to see if the snake was still there. He Ring’s camera caught him rubbing his head and surveying the immediate area before returning inside without finding his attacker.

The unsuspecting man answers the door of his house after what appeared to be a night out with his son.

The rat snake is seen hanging from the screen door and lunging at the man.

The man steps back, reacting to the bite he just received.

Realizing what happened, the man panics and yells at his family that he was bitten.

Snakes from 2 to 6 feet in length are found throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere. They are located in nearly all of the southeastern states and most of the eastern and midwestern states, reaching as far north as New England.
Snakes feed mainly on rodents.
The researchers described rat snakes as “expert climbers” who can scale brick walls and tree trunks. When frightened, they will maintain a ‘twisted’ posture, according to the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory at the University of Georgia.
Rat snakes are generally believed to make good pets, if a pet snake is your idea of the perfect pet.
