Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard has won the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country and taken the overall lead.
The Danish professional cyclist won the 162.8-kilometer section between the towns of Errenteria and Amasa-Villabona with a two-second advantage over the Spaniards Mikel Landa and Enric Mas. In the overall lead, Vingegaard was five seconds ahead of second Landa. The German professional cyclist Georg Zimmermann took third place in the mountain classification.
“It’s one of my favorite races,” said the 26-year-old Vingegaard after the day’s win on the Eurosport channel. He hopes to be able to stay in the leadership jersey from now on. “Even if I lose the jersey again, I will still fight for it,” stressed Vingegaard.
The day before, the Dutchman Ide Schelling from the Bora-hansgrohe team had won the day and temporarily taken the overall lead. The final stage of the tour climbs around the city of Eibar on Saturday.
