A public sector oil pipeline in Ecuador has been “sabotaged”, causing oil to spill into a river in the Amazon Basin, according to Petro Ecuador’s national company.
Ecuador’s state oil pipeline was “sabotaged” on Wednesday, causing oil to spill into a river in the Amazon basin, the national Petro Ecuador company said. The company said in a statement that the “sabotage” was deliberate, and it was close to a body of water on the pipeline system on the outskirts of Lago Agrio in the east of the country, without specifying the size of the amount of oil leaked. According to the company, the situation was brought under control after a temporary suspension of its operations and the mobilization of specialists to contain the leakage and clean up the place.
The American non-governmental organization “Amazon Frontlines”, which defends the rights of indigenous peoples, published a video clip on Twitter showing the oil leaking from the pipeline and the extent of the pollution that affected the land and water.
