When referee Sam Burgos intervened during the co-main event of BKFC 62, he ended the fight, but inadvertently started another.
Apparently dazed by a series of punches that led to a first-round TKO stoppage, Keith Richardson (4-1) didn’t realize the fight was over or who his intended target was Saturday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
After Burgos stepped into the pocket to stop the action, Richardson continued throwing, only it was the referee he targeted instead of the opponent. Alberto Blas (6-0).
Burgos kept Richardson at bay, even though the confused fighter seemed functional in body but not in mind. Burgos avoided the blows until a BKFC official wrapped Richardson in a bear hug against the ropes.
With the victory, Blas took home the promotion’s 135-pound title, while Richardson lost for the first time in bare-knuckle boxing.
